Welcome to the Space Show
Welcome to the Space Show is a epic Anime by Koji Masunari ,it surrounds the life of five schoolmates who get together for a summer break at a cabin without their parents , the kids range from second graders to the leader of the pack sixth grader Kiyoshi Sato who looks out for the others.
When they notice that there pet rabbit has gone astray they venture out to look for it, but when they come across what looks like a crop circle and a injured dog they bring the animal back to there cabin.
Bandaging the dogs wounds and tending to it they let it rest. But whilst playing outside they get startled when said dog jumps across there path and then stands up and begins to thank them in a well spoken voice. Stunned by this talking dog it takes a while for it to set in that he is in fact a Alien being from the planet Wan ( where they just happen to look like dogs) , going by the name of Pochi ,he wants to reward them for saving his life ,when they wish they could see the moon ,no sooner can it be said but our five friends are whisked away in a protective bubble including the climbing frame they where on to the skies.
Along with Kiyoshi who takes his friends safety quite seriously is Natsuki Koyama a thrifty young girl who wishes to be a super hero. Natsuki is quite new to the group as she has recently moved to the area with her mother.
Amane Suzuki is Natsuki's cousin and a very gentle girl and the youngest of the group ,she comes across as bitter with Natsuki and blames her for her pet rabbit escaping their den.
Noriko Nishimura is the trendsetter of the group and is often the go between when Amane and Natsuki get at eachother.
Then there's our bookworm and intellectual young man by the name of Koji Harada.
When our adventures get to the moon they get to see a side of it that humans have never seen ,it seems the moon is trading ground for many of the universes lifeforms. At first they have to pass a test to get admittance to the planet or be sent to the lost children centre.
Luckily they all pass and get there passports in the form of a trinket ,this allows them to understand and communicate with all of the other species on the moon.
But after Pochi shows them around and reports his findings ( as he visited earth to relay his studies of the planet back home) he finds his report has put a block on all travel back to earth. Now the kids are stranded and the only way back is if they can get to Pochi's home planet and get tickets from there.
But of course these things cost money and that's one thing they don't have enough of , so it's time for our adventures to get jobs to earn enough to get to Pochi's home and then back to earth ,and all within the next few days when their parents will arrive at the cabin to pick them up.
Now hot on their tails are the reason why Pochi was injured on earth in the first place, Now these aliens who injured Pochi work for Neppo ,who is responsible for the biggest entertainment in the universe , the Space Show. The space show is a huge space ship called the Pet Star . With the aid of the Pet Star and visiting various planets Neppo wants to become a ruler of the universe. But one ingredient is needed to run the ship , a root like substance named Zughan , now this root is related to earth’s Wasabi root.,and this is the reason that Neppo's alien thugs where on earth.
It all gets out of hand when Natsuki has in her possession some wasabi and ends up selling it for huge amounts of money. This does give them the chance to get to Pochi's home planet but not with out ramifications. When Neppo's alien thugs attack Pochi's home and kidnap Amane our intrepid kids will have to come together to rescue Amane , stop Neppo and her thugs from taking the universe and get home in time for tea.
This is anime on a grand scale and a very enjoyable one at that. In places it is quite gritty and the scope of the story is large . The animations are of high quality and the vibrancy of the animation is amazing on a big screen.
Released in the UK by Manga Entertainment the DVD features both the Japanese and English audio tracks.
I must admit I watched the film in English mainly because of the brilliant voice cast for the English track. With Michael Sinterniklass voicing Kiyoshi and Stephanie Sheh as Natsuki.
It was also one of the few anime that had child voice actors do the voices of the younger kids in the group with most often with these films adults recreate the kids voices.
Many have accustomed it to Star Wars in it's scope ( not story) and because of this it makes it a great family anime and one that maybe you could convert someone to anime if they don't normally watch it.
Whether you watch it in Japanese or English ,Welcome to the Space Show is a fun filled two hours and one not to miss.
